About Us
Below Deck is an independent digital publication documenting work, community, and life on Nantucket.
Our reporting draws on public records, municipal documents, historical archives, data analysis, and conversations with people connected to the issues shaping the island. Whenever possible, we rely on primary sources to bring context and clarity to questions affecting the community.
We focus on stories that benefit from time, attention, and deeper reporting — the ones that help explain not just what is happening on Nantucket, but why.
If something on the island deserves a closer look, we want to hear about it — especially from the residents and workers who experience Nantucket beyond the summer season.

Marcello Bruni
Advisor
Marcello was raised in the granite-quarry grit of Barre, Vermont, within a lineage of builders. While construction became his trade, he had an obsession with the "paper trail" — the records and narratives that explain why things are built and for whom.

Marcello views Nantucket as a case study in a changing world. He ignores the island’s polished veneer to focus on its engine: the people who maintain it. By documenting work and life hidden in plain sight, he seeks to bridge the gap between our historic identity and its modern reality.

Kayley Jensen
Creative & Content Contributor
Kayley Jensen supports Below Deck's website design, structure, and visual identity.
With a background in creative and editorial work for The North Face, Prana, Merrell, and Carhartt, she brings a clean, functional approach to digital storytelling.

A digital nomad who has lived in New Zealand, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Spain, and Nantucket, Kayley is drawn to coastal communities shaped by work and seasonality.
While her focus is primarily digital and creative support, she occasionally contributes writing rooted in place and lived experience.

Carlos Mendoza
Contributor
Carlos Mendoza grew up in Veracruz, Mexico, in a coastal community where fishing and port work shaped daily life. He studied communications and journalism at the Universidad Veracruzana, where he developed an interest in documenting working communities and coastal culture.
After coming to Nantucket as a seasonal worker, Carlos became interested in the island beyond the summer season and the people whose labor keeps it running. His writing focuses on everyday island life, often bringing a sense of levity and humor to stories about work, community, and the realities of life on Nantucket.
