In 2014, filmmaker Scott Capizzo brought the story of “Underground Tom” to the screen in a short documentary that went on to win Best Short Film on Nantucket.
Capizzo’s film revisits the remarkable life of Thomas Johnson — the man who built and lived in a hidden underground home in the State Forest for nearly a decade. Through archival material and local perspective, the documentary captures both the mystery and the humanity behind one of the island’s most unusual chapters.
It remains one of the most compelling visual accounts of the story.
