We Are Nantucket: Gene Mahon

Gene Mahon was one of Nantucket’s great connectors — a photographer, publisher, entrepreneur, and friend to generations of islanders.

Arriving on Nantucket in 1969, Gene spent more than fifty years documenting the life of the island through his camera and through his newsletter Mahon About Town. Whether it was a festival, a fundraiser, a concert, or simply people gathering together, Gene seemed to be everywhere — capturing moments that might otherwise have been forgotten.

This conversation filmed and produced by Nantucket Community Television (NCTV) offers a glimpse of Gene as many people knew him: thoughtful, curious, and deeply engaged with the community around him.

Gene Mahon passed away on July 25, 2022, at the age of 75, leaving behind a remarkable visual and cultural record of Nantucket life.

This interview is shared in that spirit — remembering a friend and a colleague who spent a lifetime documenting the island he loved.
